This photo is funny. I like how the twins are dressed alike and have the same hair style and are standing the same way but their face expressions are totally different. The dark clothes against the white wall createas good contrasrt.

Her work is very focused on faces and people expression and how they are feeling through thier faces.  They all have nice contrast and your eye really goes to the faces of the subjects.

The subject matter is funny and interesting. Some seem as they are emotionless and other faces are conveying so much emotion. All her photos focus on faces and and their emotions and it is really cool.

By: Diane Arbus A young man with curlers 1966

At first I thought this was a girl but then I read the title and I saw that it wasn't. The black shirt and white cigarette against the light background create good contrast. I like the attitude it seems like he is giving. I also like how the right to the cigarette is shadowy in the background and on his face. I like the overall photo.

By: Diane Arbus Triplets in their bedroom 1963

Back in 1963 I think triplets were less common then they are today so the fact that they are triplets and all look alike makes the photo cool. I really like the dark patterned background against thier whit shirts and then their pants are really dark to the lighter bed cover. They are not really conveying expression but the contrast in the photo is cool.

By:Diane Arbus Child with a toy hand grenade

This photo is funny. The boy's facial expression is quite interseting and he is so thin that the starp on his overalls are falling down. The constrast between his clothes and the background are good. There is a lower depth of field but the people in the background are still visible. Before I read the title I did not realize that he was even holing a toy grenade and it is weird that he is. The overall picture is funny and interseting.
 By: Brassaï (Gyula Halász)

I really like this photo. It shows how Brassai plays with light , shadow, and darkness. The littlie girl is just walking by herself playing with the lights under her feet and the grown-ups in the back are just waling quickly to continue with their daily chores.

All of Brassai's work has a romantic feel and plays a lot with darkness, and random glimese of light to create shadow and contrast.

This light plays a key role in his photography because it creates the shadows and contrast when most of his photos are taken at night.
By: Brassai (Gyula Halasz) Prostitute at angle of Rue de la Reynie and Rue Quincampoix

This photo is really cool. I like it a lot. You can tell it was taken at night and the only thing that lights up the photo and gives it contrast is a street light. I really like the shadow of the girl and how you can see her silouette. Based on the title of the picture I'm assuming the girl in the photo is a prostitute but she does not look like one or at least not one that would be in mordern times. I reall like this photo though.
By: Brassai (Gyula Halasz) Open Gutter 1933

This photo is cool the way strret lights are htiing the dar street, creating contrast in the picture. I also like the curvyness of the road. It make my eye follow thre bricks in the street till I can't see the bricks anymore. You can also tell the photo was taken at night and it is an overall intersting photo.
By: Brassai (Gyula Halasz) Lovers in a Bistro

This picture is nice. It is romantic and does not seemed staged. The emotions in this photo are captured extremly well. The overall picture is dark but the contrast between his shirt and her outfit is nice. If I could retake this photo I would somehow try to provide more light.

The Statue of Liberty by Margaret Bourke White 1930

Liberty

I really like this photo of the Satue of Liberty because I have never seen this iconic figure been photographed like this before. It seems truly original and shows that Maragret really had a unique point of view. I like the shadows that the statue creates and besides those shadows most of the picture is really light. Even though I have never seen this view of the Statue of Liberty, right away i recognized what it was a picture of.

All of Margaret's work is really true and not fake. Her pictures are documentries of what was going on during those times. They are all extremly detailed and most have a high depth of field.

Her documentation compares to modern documentation by the fact that her pictures are real and true. Nothing is fake or set up. Based on the architutcure and the people in her photos you can tell around what time period it is.
By: Margaret Bourke-White Cocktails on Gorky Street, Moscow 1941

The dark floors, leading to the light walls and beams is really pretty. The architectuarl structure of the whole room is beautiful, especially the steps. The whole picture looks really elegant including the people and everyone looks like they are having a good time. However, in contrast, in 1941 Moscow was at war and most of it's people were living in brutal conditions. Overall I really like the picture though.
By: Margaret Bourke-White Fort Peck Dam 1936

This photo is a little boring to me. It has a lot of repitition in it. The lighting is very nice with the use of natural lighting. The strucures are impressive but the overall picture does not appeal to me or catch my eye. If I were to retake the picture I would Take it of something else.
By: Margaret Bourke -White
 Tractor Factory, Stalingard 1930

This photo is interesting. My eye first goes to the man behind the big wheel. His facial expressing is really wierd. The big wheels are really cool. You can see the detail within them and the detail or the poeple behind them, making it a high depth of field. I wouldn't change anything about the photo except for the guys face. It is really strange.

Emmet Gowin: Elijah and Donna Jo, Danville, Virginia, 1971

I like this picture because the children in it must be hot and thirsty. I also like how the younger boy is trying to help the older kid get a drink of water. The lighting is very nice and it is a large depth of field. If I had to retake the picture I wouldn't really change anything about it. I also like how it is symmetrical with the two kids on either side of the photo span and the hose in the middle between them.

Emmet's work has a few things in common. A lot of his work is of his family and family members. They are very natural and do not seemed to be staged. All the lighting in his photos also seem to be natural light. The light is coming from the sky and the sun either directly or through windows. Most of Emmet's photos that I saw had a large depth of field as well. Also, a lot of Emmet's photos come from the same town.

I believe that a life time of work can be taken in one town. If the town inspires someone and offers new views and perspectives every time a photo is taken in it then it could work. As long as the photos remain interesting and not repetitive i think it could work out.
Emmet Gowin: Edith, Danville, Virginia, 1971

This picture is pretty cool. The back of the picture is very light and the subject is darker. It seems as if the subject is behind a screen and she is leaning on it. I like how the screen thing is in focus (at least that is what I think it is) and so is the rest of the picture having a large depth of focus. If I could change the picture i would have the subject's eyes looking straight into the camera. I think that would look cool.
Family
Danville, Virginia, 1970 by Emmet Gowin

This photo by Gowin is also a little weird. The family is just relaxing which is nice but why is there a split watermelon just sitting in the middle of the picture? It doesn't look like the family is eating the watermelon. If I could retake the picture i would not have the watermelon in it or have someone eating part of it. Also the baby looks like it is moving because the head is a little blurry. The lighting of the photo is nice. The people in the photo look a little bored. It might be mid summer's day so they all might just be hot and tired.

Edith, Danville, Virginia 1971
The black and white photo is interesting. The focus of the photo is on the lady and most of the light is being shown on her dress, making part of her face shadowy. It looks like she is stretching but if I were to retake the picture I would have her put the arm that is up down by the other arm. The room is cool and dark and like in the photo "Willie Cooper", the  main source of light is coming from the windows and besides the subject, most of the other part of the picture is dark. However, there is a large depth of field so one can see that beyond the subject there is a bed and she is placed in a room.
Willie Cooper

By Emmet Gowin

This picture is cool because majority of it is just dark and it seems like the picture was taken from inside a car. The light is coming from the windows of the car and shows an older man. His expression reminds me of deadpan experssion and style of photography. I like how the house and the man are both in focus. The picture also has a large depth of field so the background is clear, which i like. If i were to retake the picture I would maybe move in just a little bit closer so there is less plain darkness.

Nancy
Danville, Virginia 1965

The photo's subject is nice and light and the ground is dark which is good so you can focus on the subject and her dolls. It looks like she is napping on a tarp which is a little weird. I think the dolls are a little creepy even though they might not meant to be. The girl kind of looks like a doll herself. If i were to change this picture i would maybe zoom in closer on the girl and have less negative space to the left of the girl.
Similarities: In many of Annie's photos there are celebrities and many fantasy, disney like scenes. All her photos are telling a story and are somewhat playful.

    Alice In Wonderland

By Annie Leibovitz

I like this photo a lot. There is nothing that I would change about it. I like the lighting and the coloring. The background and set is very cool. Everything is in focus and the face on the model really draws you in.
Similarities: Annie's work has a lot of celebirties
By Annie Leibovitz

Alice In Wonderland
I like this photo as it represents Alice when she turns big. It is like a little girl in a doll playhouse and it is very cool. I like the outfit and the lighting of the photo.

Arnold Schwarenegger

By Annie Leibovitz

I like the white pants on the whit horse in this photo. I would think that it would not provide enough contrast but it has very good lighting so there is enough shadow to create a nice contrast. It is interesting that he is smoking a cigar while riding a horse and I do not really get what that is supposed to mean. If I were to change this photo I would zoom out very slightly so the rest of the tail of the horse could be seen. Also, in this photo Arnold's back arm is a little weird and i would change that.
The Little Mermaid
By Annie Leibovitz

My favorite Disney movie is the Little Mermaid and this picture is like a real life version of the movie. It is really cool and im not quite sure how it was created. I don't think they were all actually under water but it is a possibility. I like the coloring of the shot. It gives it a very mystical feeling and glow. If I could change this photo i would want the "Ariel"mermaid to be a little bit closer so my eye could go straight to her because right now it goes to the merman in the foreground of the photo.
Beyonce
By Annie Leibovitz

In this photo there is a lot going on with the jet in the background and the fancy car with the lady getting out of it but despite all that my eye still goes to the focus of this picture, Beyonce. In this photo there is a long depth of field and the colors of the background, including the sky are grey and boring. This, however, allows Beyonce to stand out in her bright gold dress. If I could change this photo I would put the lady getting out of the car in a different jacket because I don' like how they have the same jacket.
Pete Seeger Clearwater Revival

 By Annie Leibovitz

In this photo I like how you can see the detail of the old man's arm. This detail has drawn me to the conclusion that this man is old even though i cannot see his face. I also like how he is in focus and the background is not, using short depth of field. There is nothing that i would change about this photo because i like it very much the way it is.
 Angelina Jolie

By Annie Leibovitz

I like the photo because it is fun and playful. I don't like how her leg is awkwardly straight up.

If i were to change

the photo I would crop the picture closer to the subjects faces so that the leg is not visible in

the picture. The

lighting is even and very direct and the subjects pop out against the light, plain background.
